With a recent Geographical Indication (GI) certification, this exclusive turmeric can legally be grown only in the East and West Jaintia Hills districts. The GI tag, granted in March 2024 to the Lakadong Turmeric Cooperative Union Limited, comes at a time when consumer demand has surged, making it a prime target for imitation. The GI tag is numbered 741, marking Lakadong turmeric’s importance in Meghalaya’s agricultural landscape.
Rising Cases of Counterfeit Lakadong Turmeric
In response to increasing reports of counterfeit Lakadong turmeric being marketed outside its native Meghalaya region, the state’s agriculture department is actively pursuing legal measures. Cases have emerged where turmeric cultivated outside the Jaintia Hills districts is falsely labeled and marketed as the premium Lakadong variety. This misrepresentation harms both the authenticity of the product and the local farmers’ livelihood, as the unique characteristics of Lakadong turmeric cannot be replicated outside its specific geographic region.
Commissioner Vijay Kumar of the Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Department emphasized that marketing turmeric as “Lakadong” when it originates outside the certified area is unlawful and misleading to consumers. Legal protections for GI-certified goods, outlined under the Geographical Indications of Goods Act, 1999, grant exclusive rights to registered proprietors and authorized users, with violators facing penalties. This measure helps prevent customer confusion, ensuring that buyers receive genuine Lakadong turmeric with all its beneficial qualities.
